In a sudden twist seen as an attempt to shield Prime Minister Najib Razak and his cousin Hishamuddin Hussein from bad publicity after a sex video scandal went awry, former Malacca chief minister Rahim Thamby Chik, former consul to Thailand Shazryl Eskay and Perkasa treasurer Shuib Lazim confessed they were behind the public screening of the tape they claimed implicated Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.
“(We want to show) a person who wants to be national leader and PM was not qualified,” Rahim told a press conference.
“This matter is important, especially to Muslims because they will not accept a person without honour, integrity to represent them.”
He also revealed that 'Datuk T' was a codename for Datuk Trio.
But few Malaysians believed in his explanation.
"What a joke this has turned out to be," PKR MP for Subang Jaya Sivarasa Rasiah told Malaysia Chronicle.
Malaysia Chronicle had earlier reported Rahim and Shuib's involvement in the sex video. Shuib is the father-in-law of Rural Development minister Shafie Apdal, widely regarded as Najib's favorite for the post of Sabah Chief Minister.
Rahim was the once high-flying chief minister of Malacca and a blue-eyed boy of former premier Mahathir Mohamad. He fell from grace in 1994 after he was charged for statutory rape of a minor. The government later withdrew the charges.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng was jailed 18 months when he protested the cover up. Guan Eng, now the Penang Chief Minister, had been charged under the Sedition Act for printing and distributing leaflets on the rape.
Royal Commission? Arrest the trio immediately!
On Wednesday evening, Rahim and Shazryl admitted to reporters that they were behind the sex video. They appealed to Putrajaya to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry on the video tape and for Anwar to resign if it was found to be him.
Rahim also said the Royal Commission should comprise opposition lawmakers, and included Anwar’s wife and PKR president, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, on the list. The former Malacca MB recommended that the panel should also include law and forensic experts from outside the country, such as from Singapore, Australia and India.
"The cheek of it. Firstly, it is clearly against the law to be in possession of pornographic material, let alone alone hold a public screening. If they are responsible citizens, they should have straightaway have sent the video tape to the police," Sivarasa said.
Indeed, Siva's comment resonated with many Malaysians fed-up at the way sex and scandal was being used to attack political rivals and dished out on a daily basis by the BN-controlled newspapers and TV despite these being accessible to children and youths.
Anwar in particular has borne the brunt of the BN fire. Despite the constant belittlement of Anwar's influence, few in the corridors of power really doubt his ability to harness the best from the Pakatan Rakyat coalition he leads. Hence, the non-stop onslaught against him and his PKR party.
Calls are now growing for the trio be arrested and investigated.
"Why police have not yet arrested the trio of “Datuk T”, namely Rahim, Shazryl and Shuib for various crimes including Section 292 of the Penal Code for “publicly exhibiting any obscene or pornographic material” liable to a jail term of three years or Section 5(1) of the Film Censorship Act 2002 where he is liable to be fined up to RM50,000 or jailed up to five years or both. Do the trio enjoy immunity and impunity for breaches of the law and actions which have brought world-wide shame to the nation?" DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang asked in a statement released to the press.
Plot came unstuck

“Kami parti dengan tiga juta orang ahli, jika seorang atau dua menggunakan hak mereka untuk memawa perkara ini, tiada apa yang kami boleh lakukan,” kata Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz (gambar) ketika ditemui di bangunan Parlimen hari ini.
“Mereka melakukan atas kapasiti sebagai individu tanpa pengetahuan kami. Umno tidak mahu dikaitkan dengan ini (pendedahan ini),” kata Ahli Parlimen Padang Rengas.
Anggota Majlis Tertinggi Umno Datuk Seri Rais Yatim berkata perkara itu adalah soal kesalahan jenayah dan tidak harus dibuat tuduhan sembarangan.
“Ia mesti disiasat oleh polis dan Peguam Negara. Siasatan adalah untuk memastikan tiada nama atau parti diheret ke dalam isu ini dan fitnah,” kata Menteri Penerangan, Komunikasi dan Kebudayaan ini.
Beliau juga meminta ketiga-tiga lelaki berkenaan agar membuat aduan polis agar siasatan boleh dijalankan mengikut undang-undang negara.
Misteri di sebalik “Datuk T” yang mengemparkan negara dengan pendedahan sebuah klip video hitam putih yang memaparkan aksi seks seorang pemimpin pembangkang, terjawab hari ini.
Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, seorang ahli perniagaan, mengaku bahawa beliaulah yang menunjukkan video itu kepada media terpilih di Carcosa Seri Negara dua hari lepas.
Pendedahan itu dibuat pada satu sidang media bersama Rahim Thamby di sebuah hotel di sini petang ini.
Shazryl juga mendedahkan bahawa “Datuk T” sebenarnya bermakna “trio” iaitu beliau sendiri, Rahim dan Bendahari Perkasa Datuk Shuib Lazim, yang tidak hadir pada persidangan akhbar itu.
Shazryl dan Rahim mengulangi pendirian “Datuk T” bahawa mereka mahu sebuah suruhanjaya diraja ditubuhkan bagi menentukan kesahihan video tersebut untuk membuktikan pelaku seks dalam rakaman itu adalah seorang pemimpin pembangkang.
Dalam pada itu, Presiden Perkasa Datuk Ibrahim Ali berkata Shuib telah menjelaskan kepadanya bahawa beliau hanya dijemput oleh Abdul Rahim dan bertindak atas kemahuan sendiri.
“Jika perkara itu dibangkitkan dalam mesyuarat majlis eksekutif akan datang, maka kami akan membincangkan. Sebenarnya beliau ada tanya pada saya banyak kali mahu meletakkan jawatan sebagai bendahari (Perkasa),’ kata Ahli Parlimen Pasir Mas ini ketika ditanya sama ada Perkasa akan mengambil tindakan ke atas Shuib.
Ibrahim menambah untuk berlaku adil kepada Shuib dan Anwar, perkara itu harus disiasat oleh suruhanjaya diraja.
“Anwar telah dituduh tetapi belum ada bukti lagi. Tetapi jika Shuib dan yang lain mendakwa benar, maka mereka harus dihargai kerana mendedahkan kebenaran,” katanya lagi.
The plot came unstuck after PKR MP for Sungai Petani Johari Abdul exposed Rahim and Shazryl. According to Johari, the duo showed him the sex tape and offered to take him to meet Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Johari also said they offered to take care of his finances if he defected from PKR and asked him to invite other PKR members to watch the video.
But Rahim has counter-accused Johari of wanting RM100,000 as "duit pelincir" and RM1 million to join Umno.
As for Shazryl , he told the press conference he was the one who sought out Shuib and Rahim after stumbling across the video recording. He said he asked Rahim's advice on a "safe place" to screen it.
"When Shazryl found out about the video, we thought that the rakyat and especially the media should know about the man who wants to become prime minister," interjected Rahim. "They told me to find a secure place, so I suggested Carcosa Seri Negara, because it's safe and a little secluded."
The Umno elite
Meanwhile, Hishammuddin and Najib have remained conspicuosly quiet on the matter. Unlike Monday, both men had sailed out to point the finger at Anwar.
The cousins had urged Datuk T to lodge a police report so that Anwar could be probed but omitted to warn that it was against the law to publicly screen pronographic material.
This is not the first time Najib has been implicated in deals involving unsavory methods and money to entice lawmakers from the opposition to defect. In 2008, he met Anwar's aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan two days before Saiful lodged a police complaint against Anwar for sodomy.
Initially Najib denied ever meeting Saiful. But he was forced to U-turn and admit that they did meet once photos of Saiful and his own personal assistant started to surface on the Internet.
Rahim was also involved in the 1998 sodomy trial pressed by Mahathir against Anwar. Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin was also part of the team that allegedly 'designed' the conspiracy to topple Anwar.
Before he was sacked and thrown into jail, Anwar was the deputy prime minister and also the finance minister. He was arguably the most popular Umno leader of that era and the darling of the Malay community.
He denied the charges and has blamed Mahathir for plotting his downfall after he refused to bail out one of the older man's sons, who had lost billions of ringgit due to the Asian financial crisis.
The current sodomy trial pressed against him by Najib follows a similar script. Anwar was arrested in 2008 soon after he announced his decision to make his parliamentary comeback.

What that anonymous “Datuk T” did on Monday at Carcosa Seri Negara amounts to blackmail. He also exhibited pornography, carried out an act of criminal intimidation, and criminal libel. The Malaysian media in going along for a story that “is going to be huge!” have now become accessories after the fact to criminal activity.

Other bloggers, of course, don’t want to be left out. (In fact, many of them will brag endlessly about their role.)
The anonymous blackmailer “Datuk T” has now built a growing web of conspiracy of political extortion and criminal intimidation.

“Datuk T” hasn’t actually asked for a copy of the couple’s resignation letter — but that would be easy to obtain, and could be shown to “certain quarters” in return for fabulous wealth in having accomplished the dirty deed (if he hasn’t already). That’s the same as “anything signed or sealed to be converted into a valuable security” as the Penal Code says.
