[Veteran social activist Anna Hazare is currently on indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi , to demand the passage of 'Jan Lokpal Bill ' in Parliament to check corruption in India . Dr. Mustafa Kamal Sherwani has written this poem aptly pointing out the present situation in the country as far as corruption is concerned. – IMO]
Corruption!
Dear Mr.Anna Hazare!
You may have indefinite fast, you may die,
But nobody will be ready to hear your cry;
At my feet, the mightiest of politicians lie,
With them, I am having an unbreakable tie.
You are risking your life at this stage,
All will call you a villain, and not a sage;
For you, it is not wise to incur my rage,
I feel pity on you at this advanced age.
Law-making bodies are my breeding-ground,
From there, I come down with a strong sound;
In the veins of the majority, my love is found,
On you, from every corner, people will pound.
You may be senile, but must not be a fool,
You are, no doubt, angry, but keep your cool;
Your admirers are using you as an easy tool,
You will disappear if you dip into my pool.
I have become an adjective of India ’s name,
With untiring efforts, I achieved this fame;
On my shining career, you are putting a blame,
You, an outworn species! Have some shame!
I admonish you to follow the modern trend,
The Gandhian times have come to an end;
I have a firm resolve, which none can bend,
Lastly, you will be left alone, with no friend.
Exactly what was the role this manager played in the bribery scandal? It turns out that a Wing Commander of Indian Air Force, in charge of allotting parking spots for the aircrafts going on show demanded Rs 20,000 for allotting a preferred spot. An official premium for a preferred slot would have been understandable; but a personal consideration? Apparently this gentleman paid the sum, but took his complaint to the higher ups in Air Force, where upon the gentleman was accused of being involved in bribery and black listed, while the officer concerned wasn’t; or if he was, the news paper did not say so! Insiders tell us stories of how even preferred timings of demonstration flights have their ‘rates’!
Now is this your plain vanilla corruption of the usual business man variety or it something else? Air shows are meant for civilian and military aircrafts manufacturers alike to show case their wares. A wrong choice of the aircraft because it was not given a due slot could compromise the lives of passengers if the aircraft is civilian, and compromise national security if the aircraft in question was a military one. See what I mean about corruption and un-patriotism being inter-linked?
From all reckoning it does appear that the cup of corruption has indeed been overflowing in this country for some time now. A great majority of the so-called political leaders, the pilots, the air force brass, the army brass, the naval brass, the babus, the cops, the businessmen, the industrialists, the university professors on accreditation duties, the railway ticket collectors, the peons outside government offices, the lawyers, the judges, the journos, the doctors, the traders, the engineers, the contractors – apparently none of these groups can claim to be relatively more clean than the other. It is as if most of them fancy themselves a BSF Jawan on ceremonial retreat at Wagah border bent on outdoing the other. It is time when not just the politicians, but all of us as citizens need to look deep into ourselves as to whether or not we are corrupt. After all the everyday graft seekers aren’t necessarily politicians, though the chain of corruption does go all the way up in most cases.
That is why the gentle Anna Hazare undertaking fast-unto-death assumes significance. People like Anna Hazare are evolved souls not given to jumping the gun like many of us are wont to. It takes a lot of doing for their patience to be tested. It is hardly surprising that Anna Hazare regards the corrupt politicians entrusted with the task of drafting the anti-corruption law as akin to a bunch of thieves appointed to design our home security system, when the thieves are still loose! It may not be feasible for every citizen to make a beeline to Delhi. But all patriotic and right thinking citizens of the country must provide every conceivable support to Anna Hazare, as thousands upon thousands are already beginning to do; but we are a country of a billion plus – so there is room for more support. Perhaps after Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan’s call for sampoorna kranti, culminating in Delhi’s Ramlila Grounds with evocative chants of Singhasan Khaali Karo Ke Janata Aaati Hai renting the air by a crowd of some 100,000 strong in 1975, Anna’s fast may be the next most significant mass movement in modern India yet
More civil society groups are coming out to demand full transparency in the way the Najib administration managed the suspicious death of Selangor Customs assistant director Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission premises a day ago.
The suddenness of the death coming hot on the heels of a graft probe into money laundering activities involving billions of ringgit has ignited alarm that a major cover-up was on the way.
Not only are senior Customs officials involved, but perhaps also the Umno elite and ruthless underworld syndicates, is the public's concern.
Murky world of money-laundering and illegal cash outflows
There is also red-hot speculation that civil servants are being warned off from speaking up on the topic, which threatens to blow the lid off the murky world of big-time tax evasion and illicit cash outflows for which many top Malaysian politicians have been linked to at various times in the past.
Already, BN ministers are trying to deflect public anger at the Sarbani's death and focusing on the MACC's recent success in uncovering a graft syndicate although the people they have remanded so far - while influential - can only be regarded as "small fry" without real political power or the reach needed to swing the big-league deals.
Much like Sarbani. Although the 56-year old wields enormous clout within his own fiefdom of mainly shippers and forwarders, he would need the backing of "higher-ups" if he wanted to hammer through any "Grade A" deals.
Additionally, the fact remains that Sarbani died at the MACC premises in jalan Cochrane and his friends - threat or no threat - are going to the press one by one to testify that they are sure he did not commit suicide.
It is telling to note that calls by the Pakatan Rakyat led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim to appoint an independent foreign pathologist to assist a local team in the post-mortem was ignored.
Act now, Najib told
Meanwhile, Transparency International Malaysia has issued a statement calling on the Najib administration to carry out an independent, transparent and speedy inquiry.
"The inquiry should also cover MACC’s current standard procedures, processes and guidelines for the investigation of cases of corruption. Any person in MACC’s care, be they a witness, suspect or visitor, must be accorded fundamental protection at all times," said Transparency president Paul Low in the statement out on Thursday.
"TI-M urges the immediate implementation of recommendations and proposals of the MACC complaints committee chaired by former Court of Appeal judge Mohd Noor Abdullah in its recommendations dated March 31, 2011, such as interrogation rooms placed at the lobby or basement area to prevent untoward incidents; and closed circuit television cameras at the interrogation and waiting rooms. This is to prevent allegations of rough tactics used in interrogation and any untowardly incidents."
Don't be dazzled by the gold bars, the Big Fish are still missing
Low stressed that while Sarbani's death may capture the media highlight, the authorities must continue to fish out the true culprits behind the recent raids that found illicit stashes of cash and even gold bars in the possession of several Customs personnel.
Transparency urged the MACC to ensure that the "Big Fish" were also exposed and not just the small fry.
"The tragic death of Ahmad Sarbani should not in any way undermine ongoing investigations following the recent raids and arrests conducted by the MACC involving Customs officers," said Low."TI-M strongly urges the MACC to investigate without fear or favour and act on all parties including any “Big Fish” involved in corrupt practices. The ongoing joint operation investigating Customs and the Freight Forwarding industry must continue without outside influence or interference. As reported by the MACC, preliminary investigations reveal billions of ringgit is lost annually from under declaration of imported goods and money laundering activity."
Apart from how Sarbani died, there is intense speculation on who some of the "Big Fish" could be. Given the size and scale of the racket, most Malaysians believe the involvement of top BN leaders.
"Imagine if the mid-level Customs officers can be found with millions of cash in their accounts and even gold bars, how much more the top brass would be getting," is among the most common comment making the rounds in Kuala Lumpur since news first broke of the MACC dragnet.
Umno uses corruption probe to shield MACC
But it looks like the BN may try to deflect public anger from the MACC by bringing into focus the investigation into Customs' corruption.
"We just want to ask Nazri - why did Sarbani die at the MACC premises and what caused him to die? Or didn't that happen? Is Nazri trying to imply that Sarbani's colleagues are trying to derail the corruption probe against their department by hyping up his death?" PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Aziz said investigations into alleged graft involving the Customs Department must continue despite the death of the Selangor assistant director.Stating that Ahmad Sarbani's death was an unfortunate incident, he added that the cause of his death would be investigated.“However, investigations (into the alleged graft activities involving Customs officers) must continue to ensure that the Government does not neglect its duty, which is to safeguard the rakyat's interest,” Star reported Nazri as saying.
RCI and independent forensic expert
But Nazri also mocked at Pakatan Rakyat's call for a Royal Commission of Inquiry on Sarbani's death.Sarbani was reported to have fallen to his death from the third floor of the MACC building in Jalan Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
Pakatan chief ministers Khalid Ibrahim and Lim Guan Eng have led calls for a thorough probe including a Royal Commission of Inquiry into Sarbani's death. Subang MP Sivarasa Rasiah had also asked that an independent forensic expert conduct the post mortem and suggested Thai expert Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand.“RCI should determine cause of death, punish the culprits responsible and implement safeguards to ensure that suspects are no longer injured or die unnecessary deaths whilst in MACC custody,” said Guan Eng in a statement.“At the same time there must be a full revamp of MACC to determine whether MACC can carry out its anti-corruption duties effectively, efficiently, impartially and professionally without causing harm or death to its suspects. The failure of MACC to investigate corruption allegations against Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud shows a clear case of double-standards and systems failure in enforcing the law equally.”Umno uses corruption probe to shield MACC But it looks like the BN may try to deflect public anger from the MACC by bringing into focus the investigation into Customs' corruption."We just want to ask Nazri - why did Sarbani die at the MACC premises and what caused him to die? Or didn't that happen? Is Nazri trying to imply that Sarbani's colleagues are trying to derail the corruption probe against their department by hyping up his death?" PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.
Transparency International Malaysia president Paul Low said the discovery of huge sums of money and the arrest of over 60 Customs officers was praise-worthy but Sarbani's death should also be investigated just as thoroughly.“MACC should continue with its investigations,” Low was reported as saying.But on the BN side, leaders closed ranks to ward off protests against the MACC, which answers directly and solely to Prime Minister Najib Razak.MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong described Ahmad Sarbani's death as a rude shock. He said MACC owed it to the public to investigate transparently the circumstances surrounding his death.But like Nazri, he warned that it was unfair to point a finger at the commission or ask it to revamp its interrogation procedures.
It is telling that even as Nazri and Ka Siong spoke, a Royal Commission of Inquiry is already in process over the death of another Malaysian - Teoh Beng Hock- who also 'fell' to death following an interrogation by the MACC
