Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim accused the Syariah court today of being politically manipulated and for blundering in rejecting his application to prosecute his former aide for making a false accusation of sodomy against him.
The opposition leader is appealing against a decision to dismiss his application for qazaf, or false accusation, in the Syariah court.
The PKR de facto leader filed an amendment today to his notice of appeal over his qazaf appeal to compel the prosecution to charge Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
“The Syariah prosecutor failed to fulfil their duty because of political instructions and did not prosecute based on my report,” he said.

From eureka streetBy Peter Kirkwood
This interview with controversial Malaysian Opposition Leader, Anwar Ibrahim, continues the series recorded for Eureka Street at the Parliament of the World’s Religions held in Melbourne at the beginning of December 2009.
He speaks about the urgency of interreligious dialogue, how to deal with religious and cultural pluralism, the need for frank discussion and debate amongst Muslims, and the true meaning of sharia, of Islamic law.
He speaks about the urgency of interreligious dialogue, how to deal with religious and cultural pluralism, the need for frank discussion and debate amongst Muslims, and the true meaning of sharia, of Islamic law.
The recent spate of fire-bombings of Christian churches in Malaysia highlights the need to promote dialogue and understanding between religious groups. In a recent press statement, Anwar denounced the actions of militant Muslims, saying he was ‘outraged by the tragic attacks on our Christian brothers and sisters’.
He reminded Muslims of the teaching in the 29th Chapter of the Quran: ‘And dispute not with the People of the Book but say, ‘We believe in the Revelation which has come down to us and that which came down to you … our God and your God is one’.’
62 year old Anwar showed leadership from an early age. At university, he was president of the Muslim students’ organisation. After graduating he was one of the founders, and the second president, of a leading Islamic youth organisation called Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia.
In 1982 the charismatic Anwar entered politics, and was taken under the wing of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. He rose rapidly through the ranks, and held several ministries before becoming Deputy Prime Minister in 1993. But tensions grew between him and Mahathir as Anwar spoke out against nepotism and cronyism within the government, and they had differences of opinion over economic management.
In 1998 he was ousted from the government, and in 1999 was convicted of corruption and sentenced to six years in prison. In 2000 he was sentenced to another nine years for sodomy. In 2004 the Federal Court of Malaysia quashed the sodomy charges and he was released from gaol.
In 2008, he stood as a candidate in a by-election in the Malaysian seat of Permatang Pauh. He won with a landslide, re-entered parliament, and became Opposition Leader. Shortly after, fresh allegations of sodomy led to further charges which are now before the courts. Anwar denies all the charges against him, saying they were trumped up by political opponents.
In December 2009 Anwar was named by influential US magazine, Foreign Policy, as one of its Top 100 Global Thinkers. It says he has ‘a bold message for change in a country now at the forefront of the struggle for democracy in the Muslim world. Today, Anwar’s career is blossoming, despite a new, politically motivated indictment. Abroad, he has become an outspoken advocate of religious tolerance.

After watching the latest snippet of a sex video tape released by pro-Umno bloggers on YouTube, the famliy of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim have issued a sharp rebuke to the conspirators behind the plot to tarnish him.
"Who else would know the man as intimately as us, his closest and nearest family members, who have been through thick and thin with him, from the moment he took in the mainstream leadership of this country through the dark days when he slowly recovered from all the pain he endured when he was imprisoned," Anwar's wife and PKR president Wan Azizah told a press conference on Tuesday.
She was surrounded by her family including eldest daughter Nurul Izzah, the Lembah Pantai MP, DAP chairman Karpal Singh and Selangor Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim.
Only the hairline resembles Anwar
Seated in a comfortable hall at their family bungalow in an average suburb just outside Kuala Lumpur, the 59-year old Wan Azizah said the snippet was "the clearest proof yet" that the man in video filmed having sex with a prostitute was not her husband.
Indeed, a quick look at the 2-minute clip initially captures the vision of a man with facial features similar to Anwar, in particular his hairline. The clip has since been deactivated by YouTube on grounds that it breached rules on nudity and sexual content.
But from the shoulders down, it is clear the man is younger, much burlier and stronger than Anwar, who has a thin and slightly-bent physique due to severe back problems caused by a fall from a horse-ride that was exacerbated by 6 years of prison life.
"It is clear that the body and physique of the actor in the video is extremely different from the body and physique of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. This is strengthened by the fact that for over a year now Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been accompanied by his children whenever he exercises and undergoes physiotherapy as part of recuperative measures for his injured spine," said Azizah.
"Our family holds the opinion that the spreading of this video is another example of the gutter politics that is patronized and valorized by UMNO-Barisan Nasional. We reject wholeheartedly this form of politics and call on Malaysians to be together with us in upholding justice and in the rejection of such politics. Let us together bring back the agenda for holistic reforms in the political, economic and social systems in our beloved nation."
Will not be diverted from Sarawak
Anwar himself has ridiculed the last Umno attack. He is campaigning in Sarawak, where he says he has never "felt this kind of reception and sentiment on the ground" before since leaving jail in 2004.
"There are no plans for Anwar to rush back to KL just because of this disgusting sex tape. We are too busy campaigning and why should we fall into the BN's trap? I think this is what they want us to do, don't you?" PKR Sarawak chief Baru Bian told Malaysia Chronicle.
There are 71 seats up for grabs in the 10th Sarawak state election due for balloting on April 16. Those who have visited state talk of an air of excitement as Sarawakians try their best to dislodge unpopular chief minister Taib Mahmud after 30-years of oppression and poverty.
But it will not be easy given Taib's fabulous wealth. Through the years, he has made no bones about using money to win the hearts and minds of the rural folk, who have voted for him despite being aware of the mountain of allegations of his massive corruption.
Even so, 2011 may be the watershed year for Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysia but amongst the poorest despite its huge natural resources. Anwar himself has called on the people there to go all out - not just deny Taib two-thirds majority in the state assembly but to deliver to him a long-deserved knockout blow.
He is undeterred by the latest Umno bid, which coincidentally took place on Monday, the same day that PKR announced its list of candidates for the 48 seats its plans to contest which is also the 12th anniversary of the party's birth.
"Now, the video has been distributed. And whether the person looks like me or not, I don't care. It wasn't me," he said when asked for his comments on Monday.
Datuk T and Najib's well of sleaze
The sex video had grabbed the headlines last month when three men calling themselves Datuk T tried to anonymously screen the 21-minute tape to a group of reporters and editors and also select PKR leaders. But they were found out by PKR investigators and were forced to confess their identities.
The three are former Malacca chief minister Rahim Thamby Chik, Perkasa treasurer Shuaib Lazim and business man Shazryl Eskay. Despite having committed a crime, police have refused to arrest them. It is illegal in Malaysia to possess and publicly screen pornographic material.
It is also telling that just days ago, the Inspector General of Police Ismail Omar himself suddenly announced that the tape was not "doctored", but refused to say if the man was Anwar.
Pundits say the way Prime Minister Najib Razak has handled the matter betrays a bias and maneuvering in favor of the Umno elite to 'nail' Anwar and destroy his political career.
His administration has been slammed for stoking obscene politics instead of discouraging it.
"We condemn the use of obscene politics - be it from any quarter - and urge Malaysians to reject such methods. We also question why the sudden focus of sex politics at a time when the Sarawak election is taking place," head of interfaith group MCCBCHST Rev Thomas Philips told Malaysia Chronicle.
"These are obviously unhealthy examples to set for our young. Do we want young Malaysians to grow up thinking that this sort of politicking is acceptable? Shouldn't we encourage politics that stimulate and breed noble thoughts and deed for the greater good and betterment of society? I think it is time that society elders make a stand and ask, have we lost our way?"
