A Wednesday funny! We have not really had very many of these. Not because Wednesday is a particularly UN-funny day of the week in Bolehland but... Actually, I don't really know the reason for there being a lack of Wednesday funnies. Anyway, today there is one that cannot be missed la.
As you know, politicians have to attend a lot of functions. Some official and others of a more social nature. And as politicians they make speeches at these functions. Some prepared by speech-writers. Some improvised on the spot because the speaker imagines himself/herself to be an orator or worse, thinks that speaking "off the cuff" makes him/her sound more sincere and honest. In most cases these politicians are wrong about their capabilities in the oratory department. My sincere apologies for this digression. Okay, today's funny...
Crime, despite what Hishammuddin Hussein would have us believe, seems to be on the rise. At least in the Klang Valley. Malaysians have been vocal about wanting the police to do a better job. The government has also been equally vocal denying that crime is on the rise and blaming the media for the 'misconception'. And the latter is the reason that got me to notice the otherwise inconspicuous story in The Star today.
The headline read,
"Help combat street crime, martial arts exponents told".
Huh??? What???
Information, Communication and Culture Minister, Rais Yatim had called on silat, karate, taekwondo etc groups to form a vigilante body to help the policecombat crime!!!
A vigilante group no less. I wonder if Rais knows the definition of VIGILANTE. According to Wikipedia a vigilante is a private individual or group of individuals who undertakes law enforcement WITHOUT legal authority.
"Fighting crime is not only the work of the police. Those who have skills in martial arts can also be roped in to help reduce street crime", he proudly announced to a group of furiously nodding members of the Warrior Council of Malaysia (Pendekar)
Uncle Rais was in good form when he also advised those Pendekar flers, "As exponents, they can employ non-combatant methods to thwart criminals by using their bare hands. Their agile movements will also be helpful in nabbing the suspects."

The Star story ended with the report that the president of Pendekar promising Uncle Rais that he and his group will work towards forming a vigilante group. I wonder if the president fler knows that vigilante groups are illegal. Does Rais know? And take a look at this quote. Supposedly from Rais la.

Prominent UMNO stalwart allegedly raped his housemaid in 2007 but wasn’t investigatedThe latest round of WikiLeaks cables to embarrass Malaysia alleges that a “VVIP” later identified as Rais Yatim, the Information, Communications, and Culture Minister, raped his Indonesian maid in 2007, but got away with it because then-Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi apparently didn’t want an embarrassing confrontation with the Indonesian government.
The 68-year-old Rais at the time was law minister in Badawi’s cabinet. He has been a stalwart in United Malays National Party politics since at least 1978. Although the rape charges were passed to Badawi’s office in 2007 and were well known to top government officials, it appears they were never investigated. Certainly, the charges didn’t stop Badawi from naming him foreign affairs minister in 2008, nor did they stop Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak from naming him information minister in 2009.
However, on July 27of 2007, Rais did abruptly pull out of the running to become Commonwealth Secretary-General after the end of the previous secretary’s reign in March 2008. He cited the conflict of his duties serving on the committee planning the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Malaysia’s freedom from British colonialism. The complaint making the rounds appears to have been filed on July 23.
The lack of investigation of the case also prevents Rais from protesting his innocence. At this stage, lack of evidence would probably make the case almost impossible to prosecute, since it would end up with just the maid’s word against Rais’s.
Malaysia’s blogosphere has caught fire over the allegations although Rais wasn’t named as the alleged rapist until this weekend. A three-page Indonesian police report giving details of the maid’s service in his home – with his name blanked out – has been making the rounds of the Internet since the middle of December.
However, despite widespread and growing demands in the blogosphere that the allegations against Rais be investigated and prosecuted, the odds are that nothing is going to happen, said a lawyer with close ties to UMNO. It raises too many questions – few people, with the probable exception of the former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, want to go after Badawi for refusing to allow the investigation of Rais. Najib probably doesn’t want fire him, the lawyer said, because that brings up unpleasant reminders that the other WikiLeaks documents quote Singaporean officials appearing to implicate Najib in the widely publicized 2006 murder of Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu. Other documents made public by WikiLeaks allege that Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim was probably entrapped into having sex with his then 23-year-old former male assistant, but did it anyway.
So far, Malaysia’s mainstream media, all of which are owned by the major political parties, have ignored the Rais story. The purported rape victim, according to the reports and the copy of the complaint that is circulating with Rais’s name blacked out, had been working in Rais’s home for eight years when she returned to Indonesia and told her husband about the incident. After she filed the complaint with a migrant worker official in Indonesia in 2007, copies were made available to both the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the Indonesian Embassy as well as Badawi’s office.The odds that Rais – or any other major political figure in Malaysia – would be prosecuted for rape, let alone any other crime up to and including murder, are belied by a spate of other cases over the years. As Asia Sentinelreported in October of 2009, the privileged are rarely brought to tto trial. Impunity for the politically powerful and rich in Malaysia is too often a way of life. The most infamous recent case was that of Altantuya Shaariibuu, then 28, who was murdered in 2006 by two of Najib’s bodyguards.
Although numerous other witnesses and evidence connected Najib to the affair, he was never questioned or put on the witness stand, nor was his chief of staff, Musa Safri. According to Razak Baginda in a cautioned statement, he approached Musa about getting Altantuya to cease her harassment. Although one of the two bodyguards, also in a cautioned statement, confessed that the two men were to be paid RM100,000 to kill her, the court never asked who would pay the money. The confession wasn’t allowed in court. Baginda was acquitted without having to put on a defense and promptly left the country.
Such questionable cases go back to at least the early 1980s when members of Malaysia’s royalty allegedly assaulted and killed commoners. Sultan Mahmud Iskandar of Johor was dubbed the “killer king” by the British tabloids after he shot a trespasser to death on his property. Iskandar also reportedly assaulted and killed a golf caddy who was said to have laughed when the sultan missed a golf stroke, and he maimed the caddy’s brother.
Megat Junid Megat Ayob, the onetime UMNO deputy home affairs minister, who died in January 2008 of cancer, allegedly was implicated in the murder of a young woman. As with Rais and the rape charges, the widespread gossip about Megat Junid’s connection with the murder didn’t do his political career any harm. He was ultimately named Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister in 1997 although he lost his parliamentary seat two years later and retired from politics.
In 2002 the decomposed body of the attractive young second wife of the second in line to the throne of Perak, was found under a bridge, clad in a bra and jeans. Although four men were arrested and jailed for the murder, no one was ever arrested or questioned for hiring them to kill her although suspicion fell on the prince’s wife.
In 2003, Shahidan Kassim, then the chief minister of Perlis, was rumored to be involved with the death of another attractive young woman was found murdered in an apartment in a Kuala Lumpur suburb. Although another individual was arrested and charged with the murder, he was later declared not guilty and no one else was ever charged. The inspector general of police, Mohd Bakri Omar, classified the case under Malaysia’s Official Secrets Act and no details were ever released.
Earlier in 2010, authorities finally completed an inquest into the 2007 death of a beautiful Indian actress, who also worked part-time as a secretary to S.Vell Paari, chief executive officer of Maika Holdings and the son of S. Samy Vellu, the head of the Malaysian Indian Congress, a component of the ruling national coalition. The woman’s body was cremated almost immediately after her death. The coroner ruled she had died after poisoning herself. The family vainly requested an investigation into her death.
'Rape is rape'
Moments after Akin's apology, President Barack Obama said Akin's comments underscore why politicians - most of whom are men - should not make health decisions on behalf of women.
"Rape is rape," Obama said. He said the idea of distinguishing among types of rape "doesn't make sense to the American people and certainly doesn't make sense to me".
Akin's comments also brought a swift rebuke from the campaign of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.
Romney and Ryan "disagree with Mr Akin's statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape," Amanda Henneberg, a spokesperson for the Romney campaign, said.
Romney went further in an interview with National Review Online, calling Akin's comments "insulting, inexcusable and frankly wrong".
"Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive," Romney said.
To be tempted is normal. Whether you give in to that temptation or not is what determines your character!
Have you ever been tempted to do what you should rightfully be doing? Most probably not! For, the very definition of temptation is wishing to do that which you are not supposed to do! You are tempted to do the very things that you are warned against, eating what you are advised not to, and wondering about places that are declared danger zones! As old as Adam and Eve, temptation is what led the original First Couple to taste the fruit of that one forbidden tree, and commit the Original Sin that led to the Fall of Man! Temptation is very easy to give in to, and near impossible to resist.
The Devil outside may be easier to resist than the Devil within, which makes temptation a natural state of existence for us. Our natural urges are all set to be tempted and lead us astray. We give in to temptation when we rationalize the outcome and convince ourselves that we are doing the right thing by giving in. The body craves pleasure and so, all the wrong things; the mind, which knows better, tries to resist, but then rationalizes the craving and gives way. Curiosity is a huge factor in temptation. Curiosity, which is basically a function of the mind, is aroused by denial or unapproachability.
The mind kicks in and starts wondering about the denial, wishing to discover what would happen if we did exactly what we are warned not to do! When a man hears colleagues rib each other about extra-marital affairs, he starts wondering if he is missing out on something, an experience he may regret not having had? His curiosity and competitive spirit are aroused and he becomes a vulnerable candidate for infidelity. The mind plays tricks on us and we convince ourselves of the reasons we do certain things.
Notice how the day you start a diet also seems to be the day you crave all kinds of unhealthy food! You think of reasons to put off the dieting, or convince yourself that a little indiscipline will not cause much harm! The mind has its reasons that decide whether you give in or not. Temptation is the weapon used by unscrupulous people to control others. When Ravana wanted to abduct Sita, he took on the form of a golden deer that tantalises her. She sends Rama off in hot pursuit and Lakshman after him, thus falling into the hands of the evil Ravana! When Lord Indra wished to test King Kaushika (later Sage Vishwamitra), he sent Menaka, an apsara from his court, to disturb his meditation. Kaushika lived with Menaka for 10 years and they had a daughter — Shakuntala.
His arrested meditation had to continue thousands more years before he became Sage Vishwamitra and managed to overcome all passion and temptation. Temptation by itself is not a sin, though it may pave the path towards sin. To be tempted is normal, a natural state of affairs. Whether you give in to that temptation or not is what determines your character. If ever a married person were to tell me he or she has never felt attracted to a member of the opposite sex; if someone said they have not been ever tempted to cheat or lie, I would find that difficult to believe! We all have our weak moments, and to be tempted is not wrong. So temptation is a good indicator of character. You do not know you are honest unless tempted by dishonesty! How do you know you are faithful unless you are tempted to be unfaithful? The strength of your resistance is a measure of your faith, fidelity, or your honesty!
What fun would a life without temptations be? Temptation is also the stuff seductions and wild imaginings are made of! To be tempted by love and desire, to allow the mind to meander through forbidden pastures before resolving to resist them in the long-term interest, or to give in at times… Can you imagine life without ever being tempted by anything at all? What a pallid, colourless existence that would be! In Oscar Wilde’s words, “I can resist anything except temptation!”

In an emailed statement Sunday, McCaskill said it was "beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape".
Ushering Akin from the race is complicated by the fact that he has never been a candidate beholden to the party establishment.
Since being elected to Congress in 2000, Akin has relied on a grassroots network of supporters. His Senate campaign is being run by his son.
Behind the scenes, Republican officials were looking for intermediaries trusted by Akin to try to coax him from the race.
Missouri election law allows candidates to withdraw 11 weeks before Election Day.
If Akin were to leave, state law holds that the Republican state committee has two weeks to name a replacement. The candidate would be required to file within 28 days of Akin's exit.
Akin, a former state lawmaker who was first elected to the House in 2000, has a long-established base among evangelical Christians and was endorsed in the primary by more than 100 pastors.
Asked in an interview Sunday on KTVI-TV if he would support abortions for women who have been raped, Akin said: "It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
Later Sunday, Akin released a statement saying that he "misspoke" during the interview, though the statement did not say specifically which points were in error.Akin, who has served six terms, pledged to continue the race against Democratic incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill.
"The good people of Missouri nominated me, and I'm not a quitter," he said. "And my belief is we're going to take this thing forward and by the grace of God, we're going to win this race."Missouri legislator Todd Akin has apologised for his televised comments that women's bodies are able to prevent pregnancies if they are victims of "a legitimate rape", but he refused to heed calls to abandon his bid for the Senate.
Appearing on former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's radio show on Monday, Akin said rape is "never legitimate".
"It's an evil act. It's committed by violent predators," Akin said. "I used the wrong words the wrong way."
Calls for Akin's exit from the race grew Monday, with at least two Republican senators - Scott Brown of Massachusetts and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin - saying he should resign the party's nomination.
The six-term congressman in the House of Representatives is a Republican nominee for US senate, opposing Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill in the November election.
The election is one of this year's most closed watched races as it represents one of the Republicans' best chances of defeating a Democratic incumbent as they try to gain control of the Senate.
McCaskill, who is seeking a second term, is considered vulnerable because of her strong ties to President Barack Obama and the fact that Missouri is considered an increasingly conservative state.

My father has friends who have been with him since school days. As one grows older, it is more difficult to make friends because we become less flexible and more demanding. You will hear many people claim they have rediscovered friends from school with the help of Facebook, but unfortunately, they will also discover that they have little in common with them now. Every relationship is built on the basis of shared experiences and emotions, and the longer the association, the greater the chance of a lasting friendship. A gap of many years can lead to the slow death of a friendship.

Your Case is not Over Minister, Scandalous Minister Raped his Indonesian Maid
Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja was on Wednesday convicted for raping his maidin June 2009 by a Mumbai sessions court. The Shivdi fast-track court sentenced him to seven years in prison for the rape.
As the judge read out the sentence, a visibly shaken Ahuja broke down in the court.
Ahuja had been arrested in June 2009 after his teenaged maid complained to police that he had raped her.
But in a dramatic turnaround in September 2010, Ahuja's maid had told the fast-track court that the actor never raped her. She admitted slapping false charges on the actor on the instructions of a woman, who helped her in getting the job with Ahujas.
The court, however, decided that she had turned a hostile witness and may now try her for perjury.
I can't remember a time when I didn't know about rape. And I can't remember how I learned. I just know it was there, always there. Being raped altered and shaped my mother's identity, and I always knew that.
When I was nine or 10, maybe 11, and I wanted to know the details about my mother's rape, all I had to do was look it up. My mother had been telling her story for 20 years.
I learned the details about my mother's rape by reading the first chapter of "Real Rape," a book she wrote about rape law in America, a book that began with a chapter called "My Story." And as I read about the trauma, the aftermath, the way the Boston police treated her and how the doctors at the hospital responded, I also realized something unsettling: it wasn't just I who knew these details; people all over the place could -- and did, in fact -- also know the painful details of my mother's rape.
My mom was 21, just a few months older than I am today. She was a senior at Wellesley. It was two days before her college graduation. He was a stranger with an ice pick. She was parking her car in the alley behind her apartment in Boston. I used to think it happened at night, but that must be a detail supplied by my imagination. I know this because a quick online search tells me that my mother was raped in the afternoon, not the evening. A Thursday afternoon. My mom was raped on a Thursday afternoon in May by a man wielding an ice pick. The police never found him.
I still feel a little odd about the fact that I can use the Internet to fact-check details about my mom's rape.
For a while, I wasn't sure if this was a story that I was allowed to tell. I remember the responses I received when I first told people that my mother had been raped. These were people who didn't know this about my mom. They expressed surprise, then admonishment: "Are you sure you should be telling people about that? That's private." I went home feeling confused and even a little ashamed, embarrassed. I knew the story wasn't private. But maybe I wasn't supposed to tell this story. This was my mom's story, not mine. She could tell it, not I. That day, I asked her if it was okay that I had told people. "It's not private," she told me. "It's okay." Not that I should necessarily just go around sharing, but if it seemed relevant, sure. Not that I actually would have shared this story with everybody; I knew that plenty of my classmates didn't even know what rape was yet. But hearing my mother tell me this didn't quite answer my question. Because I still thought that this was my mother's story. It wasn't until recently that I understood that even though I wasn't there in the alley that Thursday afternoon, this was my story, too. My mother's rape shaped my childhood. I grew up watching and listening to my mother discuss rape -- on television, in speeches, in her law school classes, with friends, with family, with me. Everywhere. I grew up with her words about rape echoing in a constant loop inside my head. And in this way, my mom's story became a part of my story. A part of me. A part of the person I have become and am still in the process of becoming.
My mother's mother -- my grandmother -- told my mother that she shouldn't tell anyone that she had been raped, that if she did, nobody would want her. She had been soiled. My mom decided to tell her story because she refused to hide, and she understood the importance of refusing to hide. To hide would be to suggest that this was something to be embarrassed about, something that was somehow her fault. Hiding would mean giving in to the injustice. Hiding would preclude her from being able to really fight back.
Last week, I directed a production of "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and a Prayer," a collection of monologues compiled by Eve Ensler about rape and violence against women. "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and a Prayer" would not and could not have been produced at Harvard 30 years ago. Close to 30 years ago, my mother was a young professor at Harvard Law School. She was teaching Criminal Law and had planned to devote one day to discussing rape law. On that day, she told her class about her rape experience. If the subject was armed robbery and had she been robbed by a man with an ice pick, she wouldn't have thought twice about mentioning it. But this was rape, and rape, my mother was told, should not be discussed in public.
In spite of her fears about possible repercussions, she told her story. The campus exploded with discussion. The Harvard Crimson wrote about it. She received much more criticism than support. One day she received a phone call from someone who said, "I'm one of your students, and before the end of the semester, I'm going to rape you, too." This led to an eventually inconclusive investigation. The police tapped her phone line and asked her to call on students who she thought might particularly hate her in class, to see if any of their voices sounded familiar.
Last week, 36 years after my mother's rape and nearly 30 years after my mother was threatened after she spoke out at Harvard, I stood on stage in a Harvard theater, sharing this story and opening a production about true stories of rape and violence.
Thirty years ago, the Harvard organization that sponsored this production, the Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (OSAPR), was still decades away from being born.
My mother told her story even though she was afraid. She still is. But thanks to her bravery and her fight, I am not afraid. I am conscious of the dangers. I am cautious when I walk around alone at night and would never accept a drink from a stranger. I have taken multiple full-impact self-defense courses. I have known about rape for as long as I can remember.
But I am not afraid.
KUALA LUMPUR: Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim has refuted allegations that he raped his Indonesian maid in 2007.
"I refute the allegations, whether they are about raping any individual four years ago (2007) or any other allegation, raised by bloggers on the Internet or by any political entity," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
He described the allegations against him in blog reports and by the Opposition as "heaps of libellous statements and awful, ugly and wicked lies".
"I state readily that any report by anyone so far related to this matter should be investigated under the country's laws," he said.
Dr Rais said he and his family members were prepared to extend full cooperation in such an investigation, and would accept and comply with any outcome of the official probe.
The allegations against a senior Malaysian Cabinet minister were contained in cables made public by whistle-blowing website Wikileaks.
Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) head Badrul Hisham Shaharin, or better known as Chegu Bard said it was strange that the minister had remained quiet although it had been days since the issue was first raised.
"As far as we are concerned, he is only guilty until proven guilty. He is still an innocent party but he must come forward and say something...Malaysians would assume that he is guilty if he continues to keep quiet," he said.
Badrul Hisham said this before lodging a report on the matter at the Seremban 2 police station here.
"He must say something because almost every blogger isl talking about it. Although he is still innocent, the manner his name is being mentioned shows that he is guilty of the crime as he has chose to remain silent," he said.
Following the revelation by Wikileaks, Migrant Care, a non-governmental organisation which looked into the wellbeing of Indonesian workers lodged a police report claiming that the victim was allegedly raped in Feb 2007. She was then deported to Indonesia.
Badul Hisham said since the minister had made a police report against a blogger immediately after the latter claimed that there were irregularities in the awarding of contracts in his ministry, it was only proper for the minister to respond to the latest allegation promptly.
"We are worried that being a senior minister, he can be blackmailed if he does not openly deny the charge. This will eventually become a problem to national security," he said.
He said the police should also immediately start a probe into the allegation.
"If the police remains quiet, then the people would say that ministers are a privileged lot and given special protection," he said adding that the minister should be suspended from his official duties pending the outcome of the investigations.
Badrul Hisham said if the authorities failed to address then allegation, this could cause unnecessary tension in ties between Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta.
"We are giving the police 14 days to begin its probe into the allegation failing which we would be forced to adopt more drastic measures to compel the authorities to do so," he said.
Meanwhile, PKR Youth said it believed the allegations concerning the rape of an Indonesian domestic helper by a Malaysian minister are true, said Youth head Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.
"PKR Youth views such revelations seriously. The incident happened on Feb 19, 2007 but the (survivor) has been forced to keep mum as threats were made against her," he claimed in a statement in a news portal.
He said no action had been taken against the minister for fear of regional conflict.
"The issue is being hotly debated in the cyber-world. As to the validity of the allegation, only (the minister) and God know (the truth)," he said, adding that the issue would affect ties between Malaysia and Indonesia if no action was taken.
He urged for an in-depth investigation to be conducted.
"The minister concerned should also come forward and set the record straight if there is no truth to the allegation," he said.
He said PKR Youth would conduct a fact-finding mission to Indonesian non-govermental organisation Migrant Care who wrote the report after interviewing the victim, as well as to other Indonesian agencies.
The website also quoted Shamsul as saying that PKR Youth member, Badrul Hisham Shaharin - better known as Chegubard - planned to lodge a police report on the issue.
On Monday, Malaysiakini published a story entitled "Alleged rape victim fears minister's reach" in which it quoted a purported letter by the victim's younger sister who wanted justice to be done.
