The western definition has two origins: the French Revolution, which separated church from state; and communism, which erased religion from political and social life. Between Voltaire and Karl Marx, religion was marginalized into the grey space of “unreason” from Europe to China, with ramifications that extended far beyond the extent of state power.Indian secularism is a very different story. It neither ignores nor excludes religion. It insists on equality of all faiths, irrespective of its following. The religion of those in power at any point of that rolling dice called time does not matter, for Indian secularism is far more than the law. You can be a Muslim in Washington and London, and go to a mosque of your choice, but you will not be able to hear the call to prayer. Umno has been enjoying the spoils of power and wealth all this while and they will not be so stupid as to allow PAS to come up with some amendments to some syariah law which may not be enforced.It was very clear that Najib had fooled and betrayed Hadi.Najib's timing in announcing that Umno would not table the Act 355 amendments came after the official formation of the new Pakatan Harapan coalition which includes Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), without PAS.This could not be coincidence, less than one week after Harapan's announcement.Wake up, dear Malay brethren; when are you going to stop this nonsense and take charge of the country?
